ACSESS members see growth in April hours worked

With the release of the Canadian Staffing Index for April, 2011, the Association of Canadian Search, Employment and Staffing Services (ACSESS) is reporting continued recovery for the Canadian staffing industry.

"While April's Index score of 84 is a ten-point drop-off from March, the decrease in the number of hours worked for the month corresponds directly with a decrease in the total number of work days," clarified ACSESS President, Bryan Toffey. "When you adjust for the number of work days, you'll see that April was actually a month with decent growth in hours worked per day."

Based on the same line of reasoning, Toffey anticipates that May's Index score will likely fall somewhere between those of March and April. "With one more working day than April and two less than March, I would expect that May's reading - with a little nudge of economic growth - will split the difference."

Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA), the research and analysis firm behind the Canadian Staffing Index, also made reference to the strong correlation between staffing hours worked and the state of the economy. SIA Research Associate, Robert Balicki, noted that, "the Index continues to show year-on-year growth, indicating a consistent recovery for both the Canadian temporary staffing industry and the overall economy."

An Index score of 84 measures the hours of labour performed by temporary and contract staff in April of 2011 compared to the benchmark index of 100 established in July of 2008.
