On Monday the 16th of January Brightest Minds delivered ‘Launch your career in…Banking and Finance’ a career insight and networking event for students looking to enter this competitive industry sector.

This event comes as growing concern over the lacklustre approach of UK candidates to the graduate market continues to intensify, in stark comparison to their international counterparts, and in response to which leading graduate employers are urging candidates to develop ‘global employability skills’.

This was also highlighted by recent research from the AGR where graduate employers cited multicultural collaboration as the most important competency they looked for in potential candidates. Carl Gilleard, Chief Executive of the AGR commented that “there needs to be a collaborative effort to facilitate opportunities for industry to introduce the idea of global business activity as early as possible”.

Brightest Minds identifies the need for global graduates to exhibit a diverse range of skills and this event looked to address the AGR’s key competencies in the context of the banking and finance industry.

Held at RBS in central London, the event opened with a presentation from Dr. James Nixon, Chief European Economist for Societe Generale which focussed on the current Eurozone crisis.

The specifically invited students, who had previously registered via www.brightestminds.co.uk, then took part in a series of business coaching sessions focussed on emphasising the AGR’s ‘global employability skills’. A further presentation from ICAEW on the changing role of finance in the banking sector led on to an animated panel discussion which saw students posing questions to representatives from HSBC, Cass Business School, Brewin Dolphin, Close Brothers, Societe Generale and ICAEW and was followed by a networking session.

David Macfarlane who manages Brightest Minds commented; “we invest heavily in nurturing the graduates in our network and events such as this illustrate the quality of candidate clients can expect to encounter, either in undertaking an individual hire or in support of a wider graduate campaign”.

Brightest Minds refutes the assertion that UK graduates lack a ‘get-up-and-go’ approach to finding graduate opportunities.
