career moves group Gives Young People A Head Start

career moves group is delighted to announce that the 16 to 19-year-olds it has been mentoring have successfully completed work placements in BBC Worldwide, BP, Imperial College Business School, Lloyds Banking Group and Prudential and a number of other reputable employers.

career moves group employees act as career advisors to pupils at Queens Park Community School in Brent through an organisation called Career Academies UK. Career Academies UK supports a movement of over 900 employers, and over 120 schools and colleges to raise the aspirations of 16 to 19-year-olds.

On a monthly basis, consultants from career moves group visit Queens Park Community School and provide advice to students on how to write CVs and apply for work placements. They also prepare them for interviews, giving coaching on what to wear and what (and what not) to say.

After their placements, the enthusiastic pupils meet again with their career moves group mentors to provide feedback on their internships. One mentee, Senali, who did a human resources internship at Prudential, is now planning a career in HR. Her internship was the first thing she mentioned in her personal statement on her UCAS form. Without career moves group’s mentoring she didn’t think she would have had the confidence to attend a work placement interview let alone complete a placement, she said.

Sheryll Karpel, a director of career moves group and chair of Queens Park Community School’s Career Academies advisory board says: “We are delighted to be able to work with these keen and talented 16 to 19-year-olds. Preparing them for their work placements is very rewarding and we have watched them blossom into confident articulate individuals. Prior to giving them advice during out employability sessions, many of the mentees were shy and reluctant to discuss their aspirations. Gaining experience in busy work environments — as they were able to — is key to helping them understand how companies function. We are proud to be able to help them arrive at this goal.”
