CBI WELCOMES GOVERNMENT’S YOUTH LEARNING AND PARTICIPATION STRATEGY

The CBI today welcomed the Government’s new learning and participation strategy for 16-24 year olds: Building Engagement, Building Futures.

Katja Hall, CBI Chief Policy Director, said:

“The latest youth unemployment figures underline the scale of the challenge we face to get young people into work.

“This youth learning and participation strategy is an encouraging move to ensure that as many young people as possible are supported into education, employment or training.

“In particular, it’s good that there is a focus on early intervention, reform of the education system and the school-to-work transition, because at the moment the right support is often made available far too late.

“Putting these proposals into practice will require a strong collaborative approach between all the organisations involved in supporting young people, including employers who are fully engaged to help overcome this challenge.

“Time is critical so the Government must now press ahead with delivering this strategy because failure to tackle these issues will lead to a lost generation.”

Building Engagement, Building Futures follows the Government’s recent announcement of the new ‘Youth Contract’ and builds on many of the CBI’s suggestions in our recent report Action for Jobs.
