Comment on MPC minutes - Dave Way, Marks Sattin
Dave Way, managing director of accountancy and finance recruiter Marks Sattin said: “Putting up the Bank Rate now would have been ill-conceived. The number of people claiming unemployment benefit rose in May by 19,600 to 1.49m. May’s increase was the largest rise in claimant count since July 2009. But at least there are currently some bright spots. The increase in employment for people aged between 35 and 49 is certainly visible in the City. Firms are hiring into their middle tiers and accountancy and finance workers are optimistic their salary increase of eight per cent last year will be bettered in 2011. But that will be wiped out if the hawks have their way. It’s no accident that Martin Weale didn’t mention employment in the UK in his speech to the Finance Directors’ Strategy Meeting earlier in June.”
