Confidence boost for company secretarial jobs market

Despite the almost daily media diet of dire employment statistics, a snapshot poll of company secretaries from organisations throughout the UK has revealed that almost a third of respondents feel that job prospects have improved during 2011 and over half think that prospects will continue to improve during 2012. The survey was carried out at the recent ICSA conference by DMJ Recruitment (www.dmjrecruitment.com), a specialist in company secretarial appointments. Additionally, only half of respondents felt that they were paid well enough for the duties they carried out.

“The company secretarial market is home to an exceptionally talented group of professionals trained to advise companies on an array of complex regulations and help guide them through periods of corporate activity and commercial change,” says David Press, Director of DMJ Recruitment. "They have had to face many challenges over the past year - changes in the economic, regulatory and legislative environments as well as an increased scrutiny in the make-up and workings of company boards, has meant that company secretarial departments have faced increasing workloads and pressure. Consequently organisations will have to consider their retention strategies carefully if they are to keep hold of their top talent.”

Press adds that company secretaries are well aware of the business critical skills sets they possess: “During 2011 we have definitely seen an increase in the level of company secretarial recruitment activity and during recent months 90% of candidates have rejected counter offers in favour of a strategic career move. Those candidates with extensive financial services experience are obviously in high demand as well as experienced professionals with notable transactional experience for UK and overseas companies looking to float on AIM/LSE, despite the ongoing market volatility. Confidence seems to be slowly returning within FTSE small-caps with uplift in demand to appoint their first stand-alone Company Secretary.

For company secretaries it seems that the war for talent may only just be beginning.
