Cost of education to change career path into IT *IT pros no longer see the value of an IT degree* In the week Labour pledged to cut tuition fees by a third, research from CWJobs.co.uk finds that over half of IT professionals would not do an IT-related degree today if they were paying the increased fees, which will be coming into force next year. When questioned on the value of an IT degree, 45% feel a degree in computing is no longer valuable for securing a career in IT and 71% stated that self-taught developers are as skilled as those with formal training or education. The survey of 1,300 IT pros by specialist IT recruitment website, CWJobs, also reveals a concern for the negative impact of increased tuition fees on the IT industry in the UK with 64% of respondents stating that the increase d tuition fees will drive UK students abroad. Richard Nott, Website Director at CWJobs comments, it’s interesting to see that less of a premium is being placed on traditional routes into IT by people already established in their careers. The market will need to respond to this by supporting talent at a grass roots level if we’re going to keep young people with the appetite and capability for IT in the UK. |
