What We Can Learn From Outstanding Corporations

ENDURING SUCCESS

What We Can Learn From Outstanding Corporations

By Christian Stadler

Published by Kogan Page in April 2011 priced £24.99

“A source of inspiration for the future”

Jeroen van der Veer, Former CEO of Shell

“Defines clear principles for persistent business achievement”

Jorma Ollila, Chairman of Nokia

Although very challenging, the current recession is by no means the first economic crisis that companies have faced. Enduring Success investigates a key question in business today:

how can companies succeed over time? Based on a six-year study of some of Europe's oldest and most stellar companies, targeting nine that have survived for more than 100 years, it analyses why these companies have significantly outperformed the market over the past fifty years and reveals
the secrets of enduring greatness.

Enduring Success identifies the strategies that they have implemented and the nature of the leadership of these organisations. Intelligently conservative companies stress the importance of keeping reserves for difficult times, invest in several ideas and businesses rather than a single one, make the most of existing knowledge rather than permanently chasing new insights, develop mechanisms to learn from past mistakes, and take great care of their culture when change is needed.

Christian Stadler teaches strategy at the University of Bath and was previously based at
Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, one of the world’s leading MBA schools. Prior to that he was a visiting fellow at Harvard Business School and is a widely acknowledged authority on longevity. For the past decade he has investigated long-lived corporations. He regularly speaks at conferences and his work has been featured in the Harvard Business Review and Fast Company. He has also worked for Roland Berger, Europe’s largest strategy consultant and he has advised some of the world’s most successful corporate giants. He is also a representative at the Strategic Management Society, the leading association of strategists.
