FDM Group hosts event to encourage more women to work in IT

The UK’s largest IT graduate employer, FDM group, opened its doors to women interested in pursuing a career in IT by hosting its first “Women in IT Advantage Session.”

The company boasts a female majority across its management board and is openly dedicated to encouraging more women to embark on a career within the field.

The session was lead by FDM Chief Operating Officer, Sheila Flavell, who opened the evening with some shocking statistics surrounding the lack of a strong female presence within the IT sector.

Flavell was delighted with the amount of women who attended the event at FDM’s London Bridge office and said, “We are thrilled that so many women have taken an active approach towards pursuing a career in IT by coming along to our networking event. It is a great opportunity for female jobseekers to benefit from the advice of such key female figures within the industry and an occasion that we are honoured to host.”

Representatives from the UKRC and Women in Technology delivered presentations at the successful event, which covered topics such as the importance of mentoring, networking and seeking inspiration from case studies.

Both women were impressed by the contribution FDM is making to the cause.

UKRC South East Hub Manager Veronica Benson said, “It’s great to see FDM Group taking positive action to attract more women into the IT industry. Holding an introductory session aimed at women is a great way of getting the message across that the IT industry offers great career opportunities for everyone.”

Women in Technology’s Managing Director, Maggie Berry, also commented, “It was a really informative session for any ladies interested in embarking upon a career in IT. If more employers were hosting similar sessions, that would be fantastic!”

FDM Group Trainer, Louise Collis, also talked to guests about the FDM graduate programme, which combines technical training with real commercial experience, and the different career paths FDM can open up to women.

A Q&A session then created a platform for attendees to ask direct questions and gather advice relevant to their own personal situations.

The event closed with a highly enjoyable round of networking which gave guests the opportunity to forge relationships that could support them throughout their careers.

Following the success of the pilot event, FDM will be reaching out to even more women in the future by rolling the initiative out globally.
