FDM Group supports undergraduates through dynamic employability events

The UK’s largest IT graduate employer, FDM Group, has offered undergraduates the chance to develop their employability skills by taking part in a series of innovative contests.

The University of Plymouth launched a series of career-focused events to help its students develop their employability skills and ultimately stand out from the crowd as knowledgeable and confident graduates.

The FDM events team, which has visited over 56 university careers fairs over the last two months, offered advice through the experience it has gathered over the last twenty one years and sponsored the ‘Hot Seat’ event to further show its support.

The first ‘Dragon’s Den’ style competition allowed graduates to demonstrate their business acumen and creativity by pitching business proposals that would have a positive impact on the local community to employers.

Prestigious firms including Santander, PWC and the Cooperative Group were in attendance alongside FDM Group as advisors on Logistics, HR, Finance, Strategy and Marketing, in order to provide them with a fast paced glimpse into the world of business.

FDM Group Events Team Lead Louise Raycraft said, “It was an exciting event with 12 teams participating in a series of interviews with industry experts. As a firm that is recruiting 1,000 graduates this year alone, we were certainly qualified to provide students with advice on the best ways to present themselves and their ideas to employers.”

Winners of the FLUX competition will go onto compete in the national stage of the student enterprise competition.

The ‘Hot Seat’ competition, which was held the following day, allowed future graduates to work on their interview techniques.

Students were permitted to submit a CV and covering letter for a fictitious graduate position in the hope of being shortlisted by an employer on the day.

Each successful student took part in three short interviews and employers were required to nominate the three students with the most potential, all of whom were interviewed on stage at the grand final by a panel of experts.

FDM Group acted as the main sponsor of the event and provided participants with written feedback on their interview techniques at the end of the day as well as delivering a presentation.

The company recently ranked in 9th place of The Job Crowd’s ‘Top 50 Companies For Graduates To Work For’ and is openly dedicated to supporting graduates in their quest to kickstart their careers.

The ‘Best Technical Recruiter’ of 2010, which has recruited and trained over 3,000 graduates, will soon be launching a podcast in partnership with the University of Brighton as part of its efforts to provide students with constructive careers advice.
