FDM Group welcomes prospect of decline in graduate unemployment

The UK’s largest IT graduate employer, FDM Group, has welcomed the revelation that graduate job prospects appear to be improving.

Research conducted by the Higher Education Careers Service (HECSU) has revealed that graduate unemployment has dropped for the first time since the recession.

The HECSU’s annual What Do Graduates Do? survey of graduates who had left university six months previously showed that unemployment within this group had dropped from 8.9 per cent in 2009 to 8.5 per cent in 2010.

FDM Group, which is recruiting 1,000 graduates this year alone, is a keen advocate of supporting graduates in their quest to kick-start their careers and is thrilled with these latest findings.

FDM Recruitment Manager, Madeleine Field, said, “Although graduate unemployment remains at a far higher level than it was before the recession, we need to take these figures as a positive sign and improve them even further. Businesses should recognise the need to provide graduate opportunities in an effort to support the professionals of the future and ultimately the economy as a whole.”

Deputy Researcher at the HECSU, Charlie Ball, echoed this belief by stating, “Slow but sustained economic recovery should be mirrored in the graduate labour market.”

Importantly, the HECSU report also found that the percentage of graduates employed within the business and financial sectors returned to 2008 levels.

FDM Group, which has a client base of over 200 blue-chip clients including HSBC, Credit Suisse and RBS, offers graduates employment within the financial sector, which remains its largest service area.

Madeleine Field said, “Despite the cuts within the financial sector, we have consistently provided graduates with outstanding opportunities within this industry and will continue to do so on a global scale. We would encourage graduates seeking to launch their IT careers within this field, as well as many others, to consider our graduate programme.”

FDM Group is renowned for its award winning graduate programme which provides graduates with the unique combination of industry centred training and real commercial experience.
