Ad Agencies Failing to Meet Needs in Junior Account Management

HR Issues Exacerbated During Recession - Now Causing Problems

London - February 1st 2010:  Major Players, the UK's leading creative and marketing industry recruiter, warns that the advertising industry could be facing an increasing deficit of talent in account management.

The scarcity of junior agency talent caused by an insufficient number of graduates being brought into the industry at entry-level has been compounded during the recession by increased measures to maintain cost-effective staffing solutions.  Major Players believe that agencies may now face an acute shortage of experienced staff at Account Manager level.

"A lack of good quality candidates for specific roles can be attributed to staffing trends over recent years", comments Frances Munnelly at Major Players. "Salary and promotion freezes have hampered progression up the ranks at all levels in account management.  Many Senior Account Managers have hit a glass ceiling with no internal opportunities for promotion to Account Director.  Equally, Account Executives have not been given opportunities to step up and develop their skills as Account Managers"

Such a shortfall in experienced junior and mid-weight Account Managers - precisely the level at which many agencies, with renewed budgets, are now looking to re-staff - could impede efforts by the industry to recover servicing levels to those that their clients enjoyed before the recession took hold.

Recruitment specialists at Major Players say this staffing black hole needs to be filled before it causes cracks in the industry.  "We currently have dozens of great Account Manager roles across the sector", advises Munnelly, "but just a handful of suitable candidates.  Experienced agency account handlers should consider the unique opportunities that now exist for those interested in changing up a gear at a new agency"
