IT to be at the heart of London 2012, REC Technology members told
With just two years to go until the start of the Olympic Games, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) Technology sector group invited Paul Modley from London 2012 to its annual Technology Summer Dinner to speak to the group on what challenges and opportunities lay ahead during the countdown to the opening.
REC Technology members were told that the sheer size of the project would result in the current staff levels of 700 escalating to over 200,000 working in either a voluntary, paid or contractor capacity by the start of the Games.
They also heard that a post-Games outplacement programme was planned to help staff members move on to new positions afterwards and that between five and seven per cent of the workforce would be drawn from those with a disability.
In addition, 15,000 athletes and over 45,000 accredited and unaccredited press will all have to be accommodated, the majority of them in London.
Paul Modley, Head of Recruitment at London 2012, went on to explain that with such a large project in terms of people, scale, site locations and a global audience of four billion, technology will have to be at the heart of all its activities.
Members were told that the technology budget is the second largest expenditure line, which shows recognition of the importance London 2012 places not just in machines but also the IT specialists who operate them.
Jeff Brooks, Chair of REC Technology added: “We already know that technology is an important tool in the delivery of services in most organisations and it was great to see how London 2012 is thinking ahead to manage the challenges the Games will bring.
“The commitment to diversity and local employment was also a welcome sign; REC Technology members will work with London 2012 to help it deliver on its pledges where possible.”
