REC raises concerns of high-end recruiters with Shadow Immigration Minister
The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) chaired this week’s ‘Employing and Vetting non-UK Nationals’ conference which included a key-note presentation by Damian Green, the Shadow Minister for Immigration.
Discussions raised specific concerns of recruiters at the high-end of the jobs market, in particular, the importance of pre-empting future skills shortages and ensuring that immigration policy can respond quickly to changing labour market needs. The event also covered issues such as Intra-Company Transfers (ICTs) which can impact on recruiters in sectors such as technology.
Commenting on the outcome of the conference, Tom Hadley, the REC’s Director of External Relations, says: “Discussions with the Shadow Minister enabled us to take forward some of the core messages in the REC Manifesto such as the need for immigration policy to reflect the needs of UK businesses. The event also highlighted the increasing focus from employers on the effective vetting of new staff which is an area where recruiters can add real value.
“On the issue of ICTs, we welcome the assertion from the Shadow Minister that the rules governing their use must be effectively enforced to avoid detriment to UK contractors. This is just one of the issues that we will continue to take forward in the run-up to the general election and in our ongoing discussions with senior Home Office officials.â€
The ‘Employing and Vetting non-UK Nationals’ conference was organized by Symposium Events and was sponsored by Keesing Reference Systems.
Discussions between employers, agencies and immigration experts focused on the potential changes to the new points based system, effective vetting mechanisms and the management of an increasingly international workforce.
