European Metalworkers Federation Joins ETUC Demonstration On The Working Time Directive

The Euro-demonstration Priority to workers rights, not longer working hours on 16 December in Strasbourg aims at encouraging the European Parliament to vote down the Councils proposals on the Working Time Directive.The EMF affiliated organisations, representing 5.5 million metalworkers across Europe, are joining the ETUC demonstration and the call for safeguarding Europes fundamental principles of healthy working hours, better worklife balance and decent wages.The EMF Collective Bargaining Policy Committee made a clear statement to this effect, which was endorsed by the EMF Executive Committee on 25-26 November.On 17 December, the European Parliament will vote in plenary on the revision of the Working Time Directive which, if the EU Council of Ministers gets its way, will weaken the Directive by allowing a proliferation of opt-outs and on-call work. To block the Councils position, the whole European Parliament needs to adopt the report drawn up by MEP Alejandro Cercas, which has already been agreed in the Parliaments Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, with an absolute majority on every single amendment.
