Ann Swain of APSCo publishes first major book for professional recruiters in the UK

Ann Swain, Chief Executive of the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo), and Jane Newell Brown, will be officially launching their new book, The Professional Recruiters Handbook: Delivering Excellence in Recruitment Practice on Thursday April 2 2009.

The books launch will take place in Waterstones Piccadilly and is sponsored by Broadbean Technology, the European leader in job advert distribution, response tracking and online recruitment solutions.

The Professional Recruiters Handbook (published by Kogan Page) is the thought to be the UKs first major publication aimed at the professional recruitment industry, which is worth 30 billion per year and employs some 100,000 professionals in the UK alone.

The book is a guide to achieving success in recruitment, which explores tested strategies implemented in the industry and provides practical advice on attracting top candidates and finding and retaining new clients. The book features numerous supporting case studies, interviews and tips from some of the UKs most successful recruitment professionals.

Ann Swain, commented: The recruitment profession is an incredibly important part of the UKs economy but for a recruitment executive or an HR manager looking to improve their skills and knowledge of this area there are virtually no focused textbooks for them to use.

The US produces books aimed at recruiters but they normally have a very narrow focus almost exclusively restricted to sales techniques and even that tends to cross the Atlantic awkwardly.

We felt there was a big gap in the market for a book that covers the entire recruitment cycle. We have packed the book full of practical, accessible advice that will really make a difference to a recruiters success and we have managed to do that it without using a single cartoon!

Ann Swain explains that the book is being launched as the recruitment market enters a period of tremendous challenge and change.

Says Ann Swain: Those recruiters that perform well in this recession and thrive in the future will be those that provide real value to their clients. We hope our handbook will provide everyone, from CEOs down, a few hints on how to do that.

Although the standards of the recruitment profession have improved considerably over the last decade there is still plenty of scope for recruiters to up their game even if it is just by taking on board a few lessons learnt by other successful recruiters during their careers.

Ann Swain says that she and Jane Newell Brown also want their book to be a useful stepping-stone for those new recruitment start-ups that usually get created when the recruitment market hits a slowdown and talented executives decide to go it alone.
