REC appoints Peter Searle as its Board Vice-Chair

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has announced that Peter Searle, Chief Executive Officer of Spring Group plc has become its new Vice-Chair.

Peter is one of three new REC high profile appointments with Fred van der Tang, Managing Director of Randstads UK Professional Services, becoming chair of its Employment Policy Committee (EPC) and Croydon recruitment agency owner Catherine Johnstone, the EPC vice-chair.

Angela Masters, the RECs Chair, said of the appointments: We are delighted that Peter has accepted this role. As the head of the UKs biggest IT specialist agency, his overview of what is happening in the jobs market in this recession will be invaluable in helping us make the right choices for members.

She added: The Employment Policy Committee is a critical part of our campaigning remit so having the experience of Fred and Catherine from a large and small agency will be invaluable.

Fred brings a wealth of knowledge from his work at Randstad one of the leading high street brands in the UK and Europe. He is now focused on running businesses dedicated to placing professionals. Catherine has been a fervent supporter of the REC and knows all about the challenges which face the smaller operators in such a depressed market, having already been through two previous recessions.

Their input will ensure we continue to strike the right balance in our programme of lobbying and campaigning for all our members across all sectors.

Peter Searle became Springs Chief Executive in 2006 following a distinguished career in recruitment holding senior executive posts with several companies.

His achievements with Spring were recognised last November when he was given the RECs Business Leader of the Year award at its Individual Membership Recruitment Awards ceremony.

Peter said of his appointment: I am excited about increasing my involvement in a highly professional body, which represents the interests of its members both corporate and individual in an industry I am proud to be a part of.

Fred van der Tang was Randstads UKs Country Head before last year becoming both Managing Director of UK Professional Services and a member of its new UK Professional/Executive Management Team.

Educated at the University of Amsterdam when he gained a degree in Business Economics, Fred began his career with Randstad as a consultant in The Netherlands. Over the years, he progressed through the ranks to hold a number of senior positions internationally including Director of Operations for Randstad Italy. He then moved to the UK in 2005 to take the role of national managing director.

Fred is also an REC board member. He said: I have a strong belief in the work of the EPC and it has a great track record in shaping and advising the REC board. This is now more important than ever due to the challenges in the markets and imminent legislative changes.

I am very much looking forward to working with the EPC members and Catherine.
