Newbury recruiters meet MP to voice concerns over regulations facing their industry
Staff from a Newbury specialist recruitment agency, Dovetail Human Resource Services, hosted a visit from the towns MP, Richard Benyon on Tuesday 2nd June to make him aware of proposed regulations which will affect the supply of temporary workers.
Mr Benyons visit co-incided with National Temporary Workers Week from June 1-5, the flagship event organised by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), the professional body for the UKs private recruitment industry of which Dovetail is a corporate member.
The week celebrated the contribution made by the UKs 1.2 million temporary, contract and interim workers who go out on assignment each week.
Mr Benyon was told about the EUs Agency Workers Directive which the Government has just put out to public consultation, which will give agency staff equal treatment as permanent staff 12 weeks into an assignment.
The Directive has far-reaching implications for the recruitment industry which has been in close consultation with the Government to find the most practical way to implement the new regulations.
Dovetail Managing Director, John OBrien said: The importance of temporary, contract and interim workers from the perspective of both job-seekers and employers, means it is crucial that forthcoming regulations, in particular the UK implementation of the EU Agency Workers Directive, do not limit flexible work opportunities at a time when we need them the most.
The challenge is to ensure that measures to grant temporary workers equal treatment to permanent employees do not create the kind of uncertainty and bureaucracy that would act as a disincentive for employers to take on temporary staff.
Mr OBrien added: I am extremely worried that over zealous implementation of this legislation could have a devastating effect on local businesses. So I hope by our raising this issue with Mr Benyon, he will have a better understanding of the challenges it could present if it is not implemented properly, as it will add even more bureaucracy to our ever-burgeoning workloads.
During his visit to Dovetails office in The Broadway, Mr. Benyon had a chance to meet some of the companys agency workers as well as clients who use Temporary workers on a regular basis. Many of the benefits of working flexibly, including the ability to arrange work commitments to fit in with their lifestyles or the option of flexible access to a Temporary workforce were discussed.
