CALL FOR CLAMPDOWN ON DIRTY TRICKS AGENCIES WHO CON CANDIDATES
Dont be a victim: choose a reputable recruitment consultancy
The Government should clamp down on rogue recruitment agencies which shatter the dreams of people seeking work in the recession, according to a leading industry expert.
Underhand practices were exposed by BBC journalists who found that unscrupulous agencies were toying with peoples aspirations by advertising jobs which simply did not exist.
Unsuspecting candidates were sending off their CVs, unaware there was absolutely no prospect of them landing a job, only to end up demoralised when they failed to get an interview.
This is a truly shocking way to treat people who are looking for work, and a cynical way to do business, said Andrew Hardaker, Managing Director of ATA Selection, one of the UKs leading engineering and technical recruitment consultancies.
These unfortunate candidates had no way of knowing the jobs which they spent valuable time and energy applying for were totally fictitious.
This is a dirty trick to play all for the sake of looking busy particularly in a recession when jobs are hard to find. It can destroy a candidates confidence to be repeatedly rejected at the first hurdle.
The Government needs to clamp down hard and fast on these rogue recruitment agencies which are not only deceiving honest candidates but are tarnishing the reputation of the whole industry.
The Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform needs to enforce the existing regulations more effectively and to consider whether further controls need to be brought in.
The dirty tricks were exposed by the BBC Radio Scotland programme The Investigation, which also found that some agencies cheated by poaching jobs from competitors advertisements and websites.
Mr Hardaker said candidates looking for work should protect themselves by only using agencies who are members of the REC (Recruitment and Employment Confederation), the only professional body dedicated to represent the whole of the recruitment industry in the UK.
All REC members, including ATA Selection, adhere to a strict Code of Conduct which insists on honesty, integrity, an ethical approach, professional conduct and fair practice.
Here at ATA Selection we simply would not advertise non-existent jobs. Registering people on a database with no real vacancies to place them in is a false economy and leads to a complete breakdown in trust between consultants and candidates, who are after all the very lifeblood of our industry. Companies who spend there time doing this would be better served speaking to businesses in order to actually source new roles!
We pride ourselves on taking the time to fully draw out a candidates abilities, aptitudes, aspirations and attitudes, and on our expertise in understanding and assessing the business needs of our clients.
Candidates who come to us can rest assured that we will not shatter their dreams instead we will use our expertise and efforts to find a long-lasting placement where they fit well into a companys culture.
The Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform has just 24 Government inspectors to cover the whole of the 16,000 recruitment agencies in the UK.
ATA Selection, part of RTC Group Plc, is one of the UKs leading recruitment consultancies which specialises in placing engineering and technical staff across a range of companies in the UK, from small and medium-sized enterprises to multi-nationals.
