More temporary jobs are being filled
Staffing companies put more people to work in the third quarter than in the second quarter this year, but job numbers remained substantially lower than a year earlier.
The American Staffing Association reported today that about 130,000 jobs were added in the third quarter, marking the first increase in temporary and contract placements in seven quarters.
Staffing companies reported employing an average of 2.1 million temporary and contract workers a day from July through September.
That was a 6.7 percent gain over the April-June quarter.
"Staffing job numbers started to increase weekly at the beginning of July," said association CEO Richard Wahlquist. The index "has ticked up every week since then, except for the week of the Labor Day holiday, suggesting that the economy is in the early stages of recovery."
Compared with the same period last year, staffing employment in the third quarter was down 23.9 percent.
