December watershed for recruitment profession

Aspen Partners International the research and benchmarking arm of Napier Wolf Group the global provider of recruitment talent to executive search companies and in-house corporate recruiting teams has found that December 2009 was a critical month for growth in recruitment opportunities for in-house recruiters. The Aspen Index of jobs available in the UK for in-house recruiters rose for the seventh consecutive month in December 2009 but for the first time saw the index grow compared to the same month the previous year.

A delighted Andrew Mountney, Director of Aspen Partners, commented, This backs up the anecdotal evidence that the recruitment market did not slow up towards the end of the year in 2009 and demand continued to grow. The fact that Index has finished 2009 higher than it did 2008 and saw December as the first month of the year where the index was higher than the previous year is a key indicator moving into 2010.

The Index finished 2009 on 68 points, 2 points higher than the same time in 2008. The monthly data also showed that the proportion of recruitment jobs of all HR roles advertised hit the highest levels the Index has seen for 16 months at 14%.

Andrew Mountney added, Our data that has been tried and tested for nearly two years is the critical measure of job prospects for recruiters in the UK, these figures point to a much better year ahead for the profession in 2010. We are seeing the statistics supported in our own work with financial services and energy companies in particular looking to grow aggressively in the early part of 2010 and to do this through they are prioritising the hiring of recruiters within their HR function over other roles for the first time in a long time.
