REC legal helpline is vital say members

The REC's free legal helpline had one of its busiest years ever in 2009 answering almost 21,000 queries from members over the 12 month period.

Members also said in an REC satisfaction survey that this service is excellent due to the quality of the staff and the free, unlimited number of calls they can make during the year. They also value the opportunity to receive advice via email as well as over the telephone.

The number of calls to the helpline last year totalled 20,975. They peaked last March at nearly 2,500, when the full force of the recession was being felt and recruiters needed urgent guidance on contractual, client and employee issues.

Commenting on the latest data, Lewina Farrell, RECs Senior Solicitor and Commercial Advisor, said:

Last year was difficult for the industry in terms of increasingly complex employment and industry regulations. As a result, there has never been a more crucial time for recruiters to have access to free, expert advice from specialist, objective legal advisors and solicitors.

Recruiters who are fully up so speed with current and forthcoming regulations will be able to demonstrate added value to their clients in an increasingly risk-conscious business environment. The legal helpline is increasingly focussing on sector specific issues as the REC increases the number of sector groups during 2010.

The REC legal helpline is just part of the legal support and guidance offering for members which also includes free legal briefings, workshops and a regularly updated legal reference guide.

In 2009,

*The top four issues raised by recruiters were: redundancy and TUPE holiday pay temporary transfer fees and conduct regulations
*The REC Member Satisfaction Survey for the fourth quarter of 2009 indicated continuing satisfaction among members who said the legal helpline provide advice on the issues important to them and their company, on its ease of use and also its ability to provide quick legal advice when needed.

The free legal helpline is available to the RECs 3,760 corporate members covering over 9.000 branches.
