Aberdeen-based recruitment agency LA Recruitment has opened an office in Houston after securing a number of contracts at last years Offshore Technology Conference.

The company has set up LA Recruitment USA, Inc to handle work in the US, and appointed Sissy Smith as Vice President - US Operations to oversee its growth, supported by recruiter Monica Johnson.

LA Recruitment is one of only two Scottish agencies to exhibit at this weeks OTC 2010, which last year generated work worth more than 150,000 with oil and gas companies in the USA, Australia, China and Dubai.

Mhairi Preston, one of LA Recruitments three directors, is at OTC along with Sissy, Monica and senior UK recruiter Gemma Fraser.

Mhairi said: We are excited about the opportunities for us in the US and have already won several contracts on top of the work we secured as a result of being at OTC last year, so the show has proved to be extremely worthwhile.

Many of the posts we are filling are engineering and technical, including LNG work and drilling, marine and senior engineering positions, which is our area of expertise, having worked in the North Sea market for more than 25 years.

Our US VP Sissy has a great amount of relevant recruitment experience in the energy sector and we felt it was important to utilise her local knowledge and contacts in the Houston area.

We felt this was the right time to expand and are confident that by 2011 we will have a foothold in the US market.

A business management graduate of LeTourneau University, Sissy latterly worked as a senior recruitment consultant with the Mentor IMC Group in Houston, an international consultancy providing personnel services to oil companies and engineering contractor clients.

With more than 13 years experience in HR and recruitment, she is responsible for co-ordinating and managing opportunities for business development, including prospective industries and markets, as well as developing contacts and sales strategies for the Houston area as well as further afield in the US.

Sissy said: I am delighted to be heading up the US arm of LA Recruitment, which has many years of experience in the oil and gas industry and has exhibited at OTC for the past four years. We are looking forward to this years show and hope it will be another successful event for us.

The company was established in 1983 to provide a recruitment service in the North-east and now has offices in Doha, Qatar, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as well as at 173 Union Street, Aberdeen.

It specialises in recruiting for engineering, marine and technical positions in the global energy sector, as well as accounting, finance and administration posts.

Clients include Qatargas, Rasgas, Nakilat and Qatar Petroleum International and LA Recruitment is also a preferred supplier for a number of major companies, including Shell and Occidental.
