Leading recruiter sees recovery in Scottish marketplace
Confidence is returning to the financial and insurance sectors in Scotland, according to one of the country's leading recruiters.
Scott Miller, new regional director of recruitment agency Elite Appointments, explained that the early signs of recovery were very much evident in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
A lot of our clients are starting to recruit again, and they are finding the wealth of talent and skills available a real eye opener, said Scott. There are many highly skilled people who, through no fault of their own, have found themselves redundant and are looking for work. There are also candidates who have been through the recession with one company and now feel the time is right to move on.
Scott said that many of his clients are recruiting temporary staff to meet their immediate needs, and the permanent market is showing signs of recovery.
Often these temporary posts become permanent, Scott explained. It's a terrible term to use, but there is an element of 'try before you buy' in these cautious times. It helps both employers and recruits to find out if they suit each other.
Scott, a father of two young boys, took up the post of regional director for Scotland at Elite in March. Elite has offices in Glasgow and Aberdeen and associates in Edinburgh. Scott has worked in the recruitment industry since the 1990s and has seen great changes in the intervening years.
In the 1990s and early 2000s turnover within the recruitment industry was very high and at some agencies if a recruiter was still in post after six months it was unusual. That is a very different side of the industry to the one I work in now. Some of our staff have been with Elite for 10 or 15 years. We have a great deal of experience and strong relationships with our clients.
