Smart Move For Smart Solutions

Smart Move For Smart Solutions
Welsh-based Smart Solutions Recruitment has been appointed by SCA Recycling UK (SCA) to provide employees for its new 15m Materials Recycling Facility in Southampton.
Smart will provide agency labour in quality pickers and operatives roles, in a two-year, six figure contract. Smart is opening dedicated premises at the site to manage the contract and workforce directly.
The site at Hounsdown Business Park, Totton is the first of its kind for SCA, allowing it to process post-consumer waste with the recovery of paper, plastics, metals and glass from local authority, industrial and commercial sources.
The 124,000 square foot building is capable of operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with the capacity to process up to 200,000 tonnes per annum.
Kevin Thomas, business development director at SCA Recycling UK, said: This is a wholly new area for SCA, but not for Smart Solutions. We knew that they would be able to provide us with the labour force we needed, and have the experience to train people up to our exact requirements. It took part of the risk out of the venture for us, and gives us a great degree of flexibility as we grow our business into this new area of activity.
Smart will provide a flexible staff arrangement covering two shift patterns at the site. It will also provide training, management services and HR services for their employees  onsite.
Nathan Bowles, managing director of Smart Solutions, said: My own background is working in the recycling industry, so I know first hand how important it is to have a reliable source of well-trained people, especially for a business venturing into a new area.
As we specialise as an agency in providing people for the waste and recycling market, this relationship with SCA is a natural fit for us.
Kevin continued: Smart is not a typical agency. They dont just place people, they handle every aspect of employment for us. This is an industry where there can be a high turnover of people, so to have the reassurance of Smart supporting our resourcing strategy at Southampton is great. They understand the waste industry, but still offer competitive rates.
Their approach also means the people who work for us are more engaged with their roles they have the stability of working for Smart, knowing that they can place them in long-term positions and will give them vital employment skills.
At the heart of the new facility is SCAs advanced optical sorting equipment, which is the first of its kind to be used in a UK Materials Recycling Facility.  The equipment uses high-speed near infrared technology to identify and sort different types of plastic.  The units are uniquely designed with parallel detection and ejection points to produce high performance results in terms of material capture and purity.
Smart aims to offer a new approach to employment solutions. It not only provides employees, but handles all aspects of management including benefits, holiday and sick pay and training, including legally required training.
