Construction sector hiring trends give positive outlook
While the recent nationwide RICS construction market survey maintains a fairly negative sentiment showing that overall workloads are declining, a recent snapshot poll undertaken by specialist construction recruiter One Way Resourcing has revealed over 80% of construction companies have either maintained or increased the number of contract staff.
The survey also showed that almost 30% of organisations have increased their permanent headcount and over half (51.9%) have maintained their workforce. More than 70% of organisations said that they had no plans to reduce headcount during the next quarter. While we may not be out of the woods yet, our survey clearly shows that that demand in the construction sector is increasing commented Operations Director Duncan Bartlett. The positive signs that the number of contract staff has increased indicates that organisations are releasing budgets for projects and that while the sector may not be flying, it is certainly robust.
The suggestion in the survey that companies are not planning to reduce their headcount is also a very positive sign explains Bartlett. During the recession, the sector was obviously hit very badly and the number of companies shedding staff or freezing recruitment increased dramatically. These figures are promising signs and further emphasise that construction companies are facing the future with optimism.
