EU Commission proposals on lorry dimensions paves way to inefficient industry, warns REC

The Recruitment and Employment Confederations specialist drivers sector group which represents those recruiters working within the freight and logistics industry, has warned that an implementation of the EU Commissions proposals to limit trailer height to four metres would lead to an inefficient haulage industry.

While most of the European Union member states follow the four metre height restriction, the UK has invested heavily into higher double-decked trailers. This has increased loading capacity and reduced the number of vehicles on the road, decreased CO2 emissions and improved road safety.

Commenting on the Commissions proposals, Rod Harris, REC Drivers Chair said:
We do understand the need for compliance and the importance of general directions provided by the EU Commission. However, we need to make sure that the practicalities of individual markets are taken into account.

Implementing those proposals would not only have immense cost implications for our industry, but most importantly would undermine our industrys efficiency. There have been some serious investments in efficient operations over the last couple of years. These proposals put them at risk right at the time when they were starting to pay off.

As a group we have worked in partnership with the Department of Transport and produced a comprehensive guide to efficient driving. We believe the direction of innovative partnerships to improve efficiency and competitiveness is the way forward for our industry.
