Finding the right talent is crucial for public sector reform, says AER

The recent Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) has underlined the need for fundamental reform in the way that public services are managed and delivered. With the magnitude of the changes now starting to become apparent, the Association of Executive Recruiters (AER), the group within the Recruitment and Employment Confederation that focuses on the executive search market, has today underlined the huge leadership challenge that transformation on this scale will entail.

Reform of public services was a key theme throughout the Chancellors CSR announcement. The full picture of what this means in practice will emerge over the coming weeks and months but one of the key initial debates has been whether the public sector has the leadership capability to drive such a radical reform agenda.

Commenting on how executive search firms can help in the process, Derek Smart, Chair of the AER said:

Finding the right talent to drive the transformation agenda has to be one of the immediate post-CSR priorities. New ideas and approaches will be required. As well as harnessing untapped pockets of expertise and innovation within current structures, public bodies will need to find ways of attracting new talent to work within the sector.

The focus on recruitment freezes and salary caps will make this process more difficult but it is imperative to recognise the long-term value of retaining and recruiting the talent, skills and capability that can make a difference and can help to transform public services. Executive recruiters have a pivotal role in helping to build a whole new generation of leaders and managers within the public sector.

The AER is currently working alongside the REC to drive forward the messages of the ongoing Public Sector Resourcing campaign. For more information on this, go to http://www.rec.uk.com/resourcing
