Recruiters who want to be really successful in the current economic climate need to penetrate their existing markets rather than than trying pioneer new ones.  Thats according to a presentation given by James Caan to an audience of over 70 recruitment directors at a recent HB RIDA networking event.
 
In my opinion, now is not a good time to be pioneering, says Caan. Personally I would be sticking to doing what I am doing well and penetrating that market deeper and broader. So often, recruiters who are operating within a sector which is underperforming think: Why dont I move into sector X as thats doing well? However, its crucial to remember that for every new market sector that you look at, there are probably at least 50 competitors who are established, entrenched in that sector and doing very well. The obvious market you identify is the not the market you should be in. Think about it.  Why should a candidate or client come to you when they have so many other options? So my advice? Stick to the markets that you know build on your continuity and reputation.
 
Caan also covered issues such as ring-fencing client relationships recruiting talent for yourself and keeping the team motivated.
