Four young people have found themselves in their own version of The Apprentice as a national recruitment firm said youre hired to four students aiming to get their foot on the career ladder.
Smart Solutions Recruitment, which is headquartered in Newport with 14 additional offices across the UK, has recruited four modern apprentices.
And just like the popular TV series, the students had to impress the bosses at Smart with their positive attitude, enthusiasm and willingness to learn during a boardroom-style interview.
The winning apprentices Sophie Davidson, 18 from Newport, Emma Fisher, 18 also from Newport, Ashley White, 19 from Blackwood, and Jamie Seymour, 21 also from Blackwood, may not have bagged Lord Sugars lucrative 100,000 job, but they are part of a three-year apprenticeship scheme that will see them become fully-fledged recruitment professionals.
Ieuan Rosser, general manager of Smart Solutions Recruitment, said: While we didnt have any competitive tasks to put the apprentices through their paces we were looking for young people that shone at the interview stage. And fortunately, Im a lot nicer than Lord Alan Sugar!
This is a great opportunity for young people to break into a profession especially when the job market is so tough at the moment, and when getting into university is becoming more and more difficult, and more and more expensive, each year.
Figures indicate that almost 190,000 applicants to UK universities failed to get a place this year at 27 per cent, this is a higher proportion than ever before.
Meanwhile, the UK Government has recently given English universities the right to lift the tuition fee cap and charge up to 9,000 a year for courses. This will have a significant impact on university students and potentially saddle them with debt for the rest of their working lives.
Graduates from longer courses, like dentistry and medicine, assuming these fees and taking out a maintenance loan each year, could be graduating with as much as 100,000 of debt.
Even then, they may still face the prospect of being unable to find a job a situation that will be aggravated by the governments plans to raise the retirement age to 66 by 2020.
A poll by employers by the Association of Graduate Recruiters reveals that the number of applications for each vacancy has surged to nearly 70, while the number of available positions is predicted to fall by nearly 7%.

This is an exciting opportunity for our four lucky apprentices to take their first crucial steps in carving out a vocation for themselves.
Smart Solutions Recruitments four young people, are participating in the modern apprenticeship scheme in its Ebbw Vale, Cardiff, Pontypool and Pontypridd offices. 
The modern apprenticeship scheme combines on the job training for four days a week with day release, where the young people will do National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) in areas such as customer service and administration. They will also be required to pass their Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) Certificate. For those who are interested, Smart Solutions Recruitment will also fund qualifications up to degree level. 
Each modern apprentice will also be given a mentor in each office to provide advice and support.
Ieuan Rosser continued: We put a great emphasis about training our staff to the highest level. Traditionally, recruitment has been a profession that people often fall into without completing any professional qualifications and this isnt good enough for us.
We believe that, to offer the best service we can to clients, we need to provide a highly qualified team. We are taking on these four motivated individuals so we can help to train and shape them to become future managers of Smart, providing exemplary service to the industries we serve.
And were looking for one more apprentice to work in our Bridgend office! We want somebody who can demonstrate that they have the motivation to do well and who can give us one hundred per cent.  We are looking for qualities such as passion, enthusiasm, interpersonal skills combined with a keen desire to learn.
Smart was established in 2007 and offers recruitment in a number of specialist fields including waste and recycling, call centre, food production and manufacturing, as well as permanent recruitment. It has 14 offices across the UK, with 65 employees, processing 1,500 timesheets every week, and a job seeker database of more than 10,000. It has just been named as Waless fastest growing business in this years Fast Growth 50 Awards.
