REC responds to DoH White Paper

REC responds to DoH White Paper- flexible staffing is key to developing the healthcare workforce.

REC Medical has responded to the Department of Healths White Paper on Developing the Healthcare Workforce by underlining the crucial contribution of flexible staff within the NHS and the role that specialised recruiters play in sourcing, vetting and placing suitably skilled healthcare professionals.

The White Paper set outs the Governments objectives for the framework, aiming to deliver:
Security of supply - having people with the right skills in the right place at the right time
Responsiveness to patient needs and changing service models
High quality education and training that supports safe, high quality care and greater flexibility.
Value for money
Widening participation.

Commenting on the contents of the White Paper, Ed McRandal, Policy Advisor to the REC Medical sector group said: We have long argued that the NHS needs a responsive and flexible workforce - we welcome the fact that the Government now seems to share our aims. However questions now need to be asked as to how the NHS can cut its Agency staffing budget by 45 per cent- as was suggested in NHS Employers guidance- and still deliver.

The Government and the NHS need to review outdated perceptions about the cost and value of agency staffing: failure to do so will jeopardise the stated mission of developing a fully flexible and dynamic workforce within the NHS. The reality is that flexible staffing arrangements provide value for money and are a means of responding effectively and quickly to patient needs. Using specialised recruitment agencies with a commitment to the highest standards is one of the best ways of ensuring the security of supply.
