Pfizer cuts sends worrying message, says REC Pharmaceutical & Scientific

Pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced this week plans to close its research and development facility in Kent over the next two years. The Recruitment and Employment Confederations (REC) group representing recruiters in the pharmaceutical and scientific sector has underlined the impact the closure will have on affected staff and the UK's reputation as an international business hub.

At its peak, 5,000 staff worked at the facility in Sandwich, but numbers dropped to 2,400 after manufacturing ended on the site. The centre lays claim to some of the world's biggest medical discoveries, including the anti-impotence drug Viagra.

Commenting on the announced closure Lawrence Levy, Chair of REC Pharmaceutical & Scientific said:
"Not only is this worrying news for the scientific and research community, but also for the economy as a whole. We should really keep drug research and development in this country as it is by retaining top talent that we can ensure long term growth and a sustainable economy.

In difficult times like these, we need to be mindful of the messages we send about our economy abroad. I hope this closure will not be interpreted as indicating a fragile economy as the Government had pledged to ring-fence the science research budget. We now need to see there is continued political will to support our industry.

The priority now should be to keep these highly-skilled individuals employed and specialist recruiters have a huge role to play in this. We have already seen positive signs of growth in our sector and, as such, our members are here to work as trusted advisors to talented individuals so they can get back into work as swiftly as possible.
