Simon Bassett, managing director of marketing recruiter EMR said: M&S profits show what can be achieved through bold boardroom appointments.  Marc Bollands arrival as chief executive brought a marketing expert to the helm, which is an acknowledgement that success in running a large-scale retailer is about more than the old school experience gained from running a chain of shops.  M&S market share in clothes sales has increased by 0.5% this year and Bolland puts this down to the stores new advertising campaign. The online side of the business has also enjoyed sustained growth and has grown by 31% this year, compared to 20% for the rest of the market. Bolland has also overseen market beating online sales growth, fuelled by the Shop Your Way multichannel service and engagement with more than 300,000 customers through social media. Retail today has changed. Its no longer about merely having the best-run shop floor or the lowest prices. Youve got to compete in the real world and online and this requires a totally new approach to marketing, of which Bolland has shown he is the master.
