Unite reaction to over 700 Royal Bank of Scotland job losses

Unite reaction to over 700 Royal Bank of Scotland job losses

Unite the union is appalled at today's (24 May) news that RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) will close a key centre and cut additional jobs resulting in over 700 job losses.

The decision to shut the major centre in Telford will result in the loss of over 500 jobs. The closure of this centre which deals with debt management and fraud operations will be a significant loss to the local economy. A further 150 will be lost at RBS's Plymouth site, leaving few jobs behind while 40 jobs are also being lost from Leeds. These cuts are in addition to hundreds already lost from RBS sites in Leeds and Harrogate.

Dave Fleming, Unite national officer said: These job losses and site closures by RBS are truly devastating for the local communities, many of which depend on these finance jobs.

When RBS announced 3,500 job cuts in September 2010 there was utter disbelief at the scale of the cuts. Today we are seeing the human tragedy resulting from this decision. Behind each and every job loss there is a family tragedy and the consequences are often devastating.

Unite is calling on the bank to do more to offer re-training and redeployment to the workforce, who will today be distraught by this news.
