Leading healthcare recruiter sees significant shift in nature of healthcare recruitment since Coalition Governments public spending cuts announced
Leading specialist medical recruitment website has seen a marked shift in demand for healthcare staff over the 12 months since the Coalition Government took office, with a 55% increase in demand for Locum vacancies and a comparative 55% boost in the number of online applications.
The company, which specialises in medical, health and social care positions throughout the UK, has found that while overall demand for healthcare professionals has fallen by some 48%, there has been a significant rise in the number of temporary (or locum) positions recruited for has increased considerably particularly those for Doctors (up118%) and Allied Health Professionals (up 60%).
The key findings for the year-on-year period April 2010 v April 2011 are as follows:
        Total number of vacancies advertising healthcare positions year on year (April 2010 v April 2011) have decreased by 26%.
        Total number of new candidate registrations for the same period has increased by 36%.
        Total number of online applications year on year (same period) has increased by 55%.
        There has been a 55% increase in Locum vacancies over the same period.
        There has been a 48% decrease in the total number of permanent vacancies being recruited for during the same period.
        Doctors have seen a 118% increase in the number of vacancies being recruited for.
        Allied Health Professionals (AHP) have seen a 60% decrease.
        Care work has seen a 45% increase.
        Dentists have seen a 10% increase.
        Nurses have seen a 19% decrease.
        Social Work has seen a 42% decrease.
Andre Shelton, managing director, BritishMedicalJobs, said: We expected to see an increase in candidate registrations, applications and a change in the types of roles we would see advertised in light of the government spending cuts. However, no one could have quite anticipated the speed at which these changes would start to take effect.
Warning against continued permanent job cuts within the NHS, Mr Shelton says that the move to employing more locums could lead to a lower quality of service for patients and have a detrimental effect on patient care if staff and resources continue to be overstretched. He said:
Accelerating the withdrawal of key services from the NHS [under the Governments Health & Social Care Bill which many believe will result in the loss of some 50,000 healthcare positions] has not only seen an increase in the number of temporary staff/locums being employed and an unprecedented rise in healthcare professionals registering for work, but it is in danger of alienating public support for the health service.
