REC responds ahead of Iain Duncan Smiths speech on firms hiring young UK unemployed workers
The REC has responded ahead of Iain Duncan Smiths speech this afternoon when the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions will urge businesses to employ young British people ahead of migrant workers.
Gillian Econopouly, the RECs Head of Policy said: What is important is that we improve not shrink the candidate pool. There are already stringent controls on migrants coming from outside the EU with only high skilled workers granted entry.
With the high levels of youth unemployment in this country, it is crucial that businesses and Government work together. We encourage the Government to look at financial incentives, such as a National Insurance holiday for SMEs taking on young people, along with other measures to tackle the youth jobs crisis.
If young people are going to be able to get a foot in the door of what is essentially a global jobs market, employers, recruiters and the Government need to work together to ensure that the focus in schools is on giving the right guidance to equip future jobseekers with the skills to succeed.
The REC set up its own Youth Employment Taskforce 18 months with its aim being to find practical solutions to get the UKs one million young jobless back into work.
