REC response to latest GDP figures

The Office for National Statistics today published figures for the Gross Domestic Product for the second quarter of 2011 which show that the economy has grown by 0.2 per cent.

Commenting on the latest contraction in growth, Kevin Green, the REC’s Chief Executive, said: “The anaemic state of the economy means that we will not yet see the step-change in the UK jobs market that we are all looking for. However, we remain optimistic that employment will improve across the latter part of this year and into 2012.

“Our latest JobsOutlook shows an increase in business confidence with nearly three-quarters of employers are looking to hire more permanent staff over the next three months. In addition, the REC/KPMG Report on Jobs has shown that demand for staff has grown for 23 consecutive months although the rate of growth has slowed recently.

“Today’s figures confirm that the Government must do everything possible to accelerate growth. Only then will we see the UK’s jobs market really picking up pace.”
