Unite calls for investment into mesothelioma, following London conference on disease

Unite, the largest union in the country, today (1 July) renewed its call for the government to invest in the causes and treatment of mesothelioma, a fatal asbestos related disease, which kills over 2,000 people each year.

The call from Unite, which has thousands of members in the affected industries, follows the Action Mesothelioma Day Event at St Bartholomews Hospital, London.

Unite Assistant General Secretary, Gail Cartmail said: The coalition needs to provide funds for greater investment into understanding and treating this terrible disease that kills 2,000 people a year, according to the Health & Safety Executive, many of them working in the construction, engineering, ship building and rail industries.
In 2009, Unite, together with asbestos support groups and sister unions, called for the government to invest millions in research to treat the sufferers, their families and friends.
Mesothelioma is the least researched of the top 20 cancers, a disease which has devastated millions of families world wide.
