HR expert Peter Cheese says wellness means fewer lost work days

Former Accenture head of talent and HR Consulting Peter Cheese says a wellness programme can cut the number of lost work days by up to 80%.

Speaking at the CIPD annual conference and exhibition last week Cheese outlined the business case for investing in staff wellbeing. He said the direct benefits include lower healthcare costs, fewer lost work days and fewer safety incidents. Indirect benefits include a reduction in staff turnover, less “presenteeism”, an increase in staff morale and increased productivity.

Cheese’s message echoes that of former Tesco chief Sir Terry Leahy who told CIPD delegates that “the soft side of management matters more than the hard stuff”.

Cheese, who is also a director of wellness services provider iGlobalWellness, spoke at CIPD 2011 last Wednesday (9 November) as part of the Employee Benefits Hub.

iGlobalWellness is leading developments in the wellness industry by encouraging companies to move from the passive supply of wellness services, such as the provision of gym memberships if staff want them, to an integrated wellness programme which caters for all staff, is driven from the top down and has sustainability measures at the heart of the programme.
