ORION GROUP MAKE SIGNIFICANT HIRE IN HR DIRECTOR

ORION GROUP MAKE SIGNIFICANT HIRE IN HR DIRECTOR

A global leader in manpower provision has strengthened its human resources (HR) offering with the appointment of Ross MacRae, an expert with more than 20 years’ professional experience.

Orion Group welcomed MacRae into the business recently to take up position as Group Human Resource Director, operating from the company’s head office in Inverness.

A former Wood Group employee, MacRae is a seasoned HR man with decades of know-how to draw from – an impressive CV which will stand him in good stead as he sets out to complement Orion Group’s well developed HR practices and policies.

The 41 year-old family man hailing from Inverness says: “Orion Group is a growing organisation with substantial international capabilities and I believe my skill-set will be advantageous to the company. My key strengths are my knowledge of recruitment related legislation, policy support and operational awareness.

“I will be advising the Group and clients about the intricacies of new contracts and provide strategic advice on how to avoid potential liabilities – which are unfortunate yet avoidable employment law pitfalls.

“Always a pragmatist, when it comes to HR implementation my focus will be on operations – bringing a fresh pair of eyes and ears to the table. I am really looking forward to getting stuck in here. There’s plenty to be getting on with owing to the number of workers we have on assignment.”

The company provides permanent and contract staff to organisations across the world and has up to 3,500 personnel in the UK and 1500 worldwide on assignment at any one time.

With an impressive track record in the field of HR, both academically and professionally, MacRae is well equipped to look after the company’s large personnel.

The father of two holds a BA Open Degree and Diploma in HR as well as membership of several professional accredited organisations. He has also held down key positions with Subsea 7 and Halliburton.

In the early & lsquo;90s MacRae decided HR was for him after working for a recruitment agency during a time when organisations relied heavily on application forms to source candidates. On witnessing an endless number of candidates being misinterpreted he decided it was time to embark on a career path to help companies source the right people for the jobs.

“One instance that has never left me was when a semi-skilled worker thought crushing peanuts with his bare hands was an appropriate skill to add to an application form. Similarly, a person was quoted saying to a potential employer that he heard about the position from the local pub mafia. That’s what did it for me. I knew that i could really make a difference in this field, and that’s what I went on to do” he added.

Although much of his decision to join the company was based around career progression, family played a significant factor when MacRae finally accepted the top level role. He concludes: “I am a Highland boy at heart, and while it was nice to spend time living in Aberdeen, I always knew that one day I would come back to my roots and spend more time with my family.”

Orion Group is a global leader in staff provision, supplying key staff to the engineering industry across the globe. The company employs more than 270 staff across eight UK and 19 worldwide offices and has had headquarters in Inverness since its inception in 1987.
