Department for Education announcement - Unlocking Britain's Potential Director responds

Andy Powell, Director of Adecco Group’s Unlocking Britain’s Potential campaign, said: “We welcome the move as a strong signal that the education system ought to be geared towards the rigour and excellence that are needed to equip Britain’s workforce for the global economy. We do believe, however, that the obsessive link between school standards and academic qualifications needs to be broken in favour of a greater recognition of the employability skills of school leavers.

“As part of the Unlocking Britain’s Potential research we’ve conducted, a third of businesses (36 per cent) think the education system is failing to meet the needs of the workplace. Meanwhile, over a half (52 per cent) of workers think the education system has failed to equip young people with the right skills for work. This just shows that the education system is failing to equip young people with the most basic skills required for employment.

“The curriculum has to focus on getting the basics right to deliver a workforce that delivers a mix of skills and academic qualifications to make UK plc thrive. On a significant scale, employers are telling us that the system is not fit for purpose and that there is a large gap between what students are taught and what an employer needs.”
