New computer science curriculum the right move, REC Technology agrees

REC Technology, the body representing IT recruitment agencies, today welcomed Education Secretary Michael Gove’s announcement that the current IT and computing GCSEs will be replaced with a new curriculum focusing more on the hard skills needed by industry.

Reacting to the announcement, REC Technology Chair Jeff Brooks said:

“It is getting harder every year for IT recruiters to find new, talented candidates to supply to the industry. We published research last year, & lsquo;Skills Shortages in the ICT Workplace’, which explored this in depth. One of the clearest and most important findings was that we have to completely rethink how we teach computing in schools. Fewer and fewer children are taking the current courses, which is not surprising when you see how little they do to give children the tools to explore computing for themselves.

“Seeing the government recognise this clear need and respond swiftly is very encouraging. Their decision to ask industry and academia to help re-write the curriculum is the right one, and REC Technology look forward to taking part in the consultation.

“IT recruiters have a fantastic insight into the demands the job market will make of future workers. The more we can do to share this with schools and universities, the better.”
