Altrincham Tops Trophy Table in Meridian Business Support Awards

Staff from recruitment specialist Meridian Business Support’s Altrincham offices came out top in the company’s annual awards with 16 honours, including winning Branch of the Year.

The team from Altrincham Mechanical & Electrical branch won Branch of the Year for making the best net profit of any of the firm’s 80 branches. They also helped the office enter the 100 Club – for branches that have reached and surpassed the milestone of &pound100,000 net profit in the year.

A joint success was enjoyed by Nigel Dobinson and Dave Thomas in the Awesome Idea category for their winning idea of replacing the patchwork of different telephone systems across the company with one Voxalis system. The move will save Meridian at least &pound250,000 over three years and has made communications between branches faster, easier and more cost-efficient.

Winner in the Best Newcomer award was Jenny Begley, who started with Meridian as Bid Manager in the early part of last year.

Also individually recognised was Accountant Martin Angus, who was named Support Staff Employee of the Year.

Customer Service Awards were given to five Altrincham team members - Debbie Lloyd, Marketing Nicola Garforth, Facilities and Procurement Mark Donnelly, Altrincham M&E Joe Hambidge, Resource Centre and Sarah Dobinson, IT. Long service awards were also received by six Altrincham-based staff.

Eight branches also gained entry to the prestigious 100 Club for reaching and surpassing the admirable milestone of &pound100,000 net profit in the last year. They were Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Newcastle under Lyme, Northampton, Swansea, Taunton and Wakefield.

Individual winners from other branches were:

Consultant of the Year — Karen Plummer of Taunton. Karen was honoured with one of the most coveted and hard-fought awards decided by voting for delivering more than &pound400,000 in margins in the last year, being a great team player, developing superb client relationships and being a bundle of energy in one of Meridian’s most successful branches. Karen joining Meridian following the acquisition of Westaff in 2010, having started her career there in 2008.

Deal of the Year — Area Sales Manager Richard Osmond, of Cheltenham. Richard won the award for negotiating the contract with new client, the international engineering group Spirax Sarco. The deal means Meridian’s expertise is now being used in high added-value technical manufacturing and has enabled Meridian to open a new industrial branch on-site, develop its technical offering and expand its commercial team into prestigious new office space in Cheltenham.

Manager of the Year — James Turner, Wakefield. James won the award for being the recruitment specialist who exhibited all of the qualities which make a great manager. He started his career on Meridian’s Graduate Recruitment Scheme in 2005. Following a stint in London Construction, he relocated to Wakefield Industrial branch and took over the full management role there on the January 1 2011.

Student of the Year — Claire Schmid, of the Witney Commercial branch. Claire was awarded the Meridian REC Student of the Year Award for 2010 for being the person who gained the highest mark in the REC’s Certificate in Recruitment Practice exam.

The Thrive Cup —Northampton Uniq branch. They won for being the branch with the biggest net profit after four rounds of knockout-style head-to-head competition.

One member of staff received a long service award for 15 years service, while 12 were honoured for 10 years and 14 for five years.

Meridian Business Support’s awards event took place at the Holiday Inn in Stratford-upon-Avon and celebrated how the company’s success over the past year was made possible by the outstanding individual and team performances.
