Non-Executives Unlimited launches to recruit NEDs for charities and social enterprises

Trustees Unlimited, the joint venture recruitment business set up by Russam GMS, NCVO and Bates Wells & Braithwaite has launched a new service, Non-Executives Unlimited, to recruit non-executive directors for the boards of charities with trading arms and social enterprises.

According to Social Enterprise UK, there are 62,000 social enterprises in Britain currently, contributing &pound24bn to the economy and employing almost a million people. However, many are struggling to recruit high quality trustees and non executives to their boards.

Ian Joseph, Director of Trustees and Non Executives Unlimited commented, “The number of social enterprises in the UK is growing fast and many have vacancies for non execs. Social enterprises are businesses first and foremost and need to make a profit. Many are crying out for people with specialist skills and strong commercial experience to join their boards as non executive directors and help them grow.”

“Too many of these organisations are relying on word of mouth recommendations to source trustees and non execs and they are not getting people from diverse backgrounds who can offer the skills they need. Charities and social enterprises need to look outside their existing networks to find these people,” he added.

Richard Williams, Director of Enterprise and Development at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) said, "We have just published NCVO’s latest & lsquo;Charity Forecast’ and 90% of survey respondents claimed they expected the voluntary sector’s financial fortunes to worsen over the next year. Interestingly, a third of charities also expect to increase the number of services they offer this year – they are going to need an injection of skills and support to achieve this. Many social enterprises are in effect the trading arms of charities and need talented independent non executive directors to help set strategy and to focus on the commercial objectives."

Non-Executives Unlimited has a database of 1,500 senior level executives, many with commercial backgrounds from the public, private and civil society sector, who are looking to become non executives of social enterprises or join the boards of charity trading arms. The company provides trustee and non executive training for its candidates to ensure they are & lsquo;board ready’ when they join an organisation. The company offers two services to suit social enterprises and charities with different budgets – a basic and standard service.

The company has recently recruited the new Chair of the Public Fundraising Regulatory Authority (PFRA) and the Chair and a non executive at The Barnet Group.
