Reaction to ONS graduate employment stats from Adecco Group UK

In reaction to a statistics from the ONS showing that the percentage of recent graduates working in lower skilled jobs has risen from 26.7 per cent in 2001 to 35.9 per cent at the end of 2011, Chris Moore, Managing Director, Adecco said:

“Today’s youth employment figures further highlight the damaging disconnect between the high level skills required by UK employers and the skills that the UK’s education system is providing our graduates. The challenge is not just finding the right jobs for our young people – but ensuring they have the skills they need to be effective in those roles. Over a third (36%) of employers think the education system is failing to meet the needs of employers today, and nearly half (46%) of graduate workers think that university does not equip them with the right skills to do their job, according to research we conducted as part of our Unlocking Britain’s Potential campaign. The UK is in danger of creating a & lsquo;lost workforce’, whose lack of basic workplace skills renders them largely unemployable. To combat the UK’s impending youth unemployability crisis, we are now calling for employers to be more engaged in education, and for the Government to set up an urgent task force to examine precisely how we achieve this.”
