A quarter of senior hires are made from out side Scotland

A quarter (28%) of jobs paying over &pound50,000 per year within the Scottish financial services sector were filled from out side Scotland last year, according to Change Recruitment Group’s latest financial services survey.

However, the vast majority (88%) of positions taken- up under the &pound50,000 salary threshold were done so from within Scotland.

The sector, which accounts for over 95,000 jobs in Scotland, was keen to hang on to talent with two in five (39%) candidates experiencing some kind on counter offer from their current employer upon handing in their notice.

Candidates who chose to move to a new role within the sector saw an average salary uplift of 8%.

Andrew Welsh, Associate Director at Change Recruitment, commented: “Within the last year we have seen an influx of talent from financial services centres such as London, Dublin and Luxemburg. Scotland has a wealth of financial services expertise, second only to London in the UK. However, at a senior level clients are looking for a specific skill set and product knowledge that frequently has them looking further afield to attract talent. The established market and the high standard of living make it relatively easy to attract candidates to Scotland.

“2012 is off to a fairly promising start in regards to job vacancies. Some clients have remained hesitant when it comes to increasing their permanent headcount, but on the whole we have seen an upturn in vacancies for permanent staff. Much of the on-going recruitment remains heavily weighted towards temps and contractors, who can command rates above that of the equivalent salary and this offers employer’s greater flexibility when it comes to their staffing strategies.”
