Andrew Williamson is announced Chairman of Sanctuary Personnel

Having spent more than 30 years leading social services, Andrew Williamson is welcomed as Chairman of Sanctuary Personnel, one of the largest social work companies in the UK.

Mr Williamson, who is currently the Chair of NHS Cornwall and Isle of Scilly, will be joining five other directors on Sanctuary's executive team, meaning overall control of the board now rests with qualified social workers. With &pound38 million annual turnover, Sanctuary is now one of the largest social work led organisations in Britain and employs more practitioners than most Local Authorities.

James Rook, Managing Director, said: "During the last ten years, the theories we have noticed social workers using around us to make sense of how people develop and form relationships, have inspired Sanctuary's corporate strategy and the way we interact with our customers. At the same time, the professional practice and teamwork of social workers is a businessman's dream come true.”

Sanctuary has become the preferred supplier of qualified social workers to more than 170 councils and preferred provider for NSPCC and Cafcass on a national level. Further to this, Sanctuary carries out the assessments and fieldwork for thousands of vulnerable children every year and, unlike a Local Authority, its population can suddenly double in size due to referrals coming in.

James continues, “Part of Mr Williamson’s role will be to set out a growth path that will always be safe for service users, while the company's scale and processes change in the background. It means we can always be there for directors of children's services in an emergency.”

Mr Williamson, who was awarded a CBE in recognition of his services to social work in June 1999, first became acquainted with Sanctuary through their input into the annual Social Worker of the Year Awards. Mr Williamson joined the high profile judging panel of last year’s event, which was hosted by Sanctuary at the House of Lords. On beginning his role as Chair of Sanctuary, Mr Williamson said: “I am delighted to have been invited to join the Board of Sanctuary and look forward very much to working with James and staff to assist in the development of the company.”
