Marks Sattin Comment On Female Quotas

Tracey Alper, Director of executive recruitment at specialist accountancy recruiter Marks Sattin comments on European Commissioner Viviane Reding’s plans to introduce mandatory quotas for women on non-executive boards:

“These plans are admirable but misguided. Gender inequality on UK boards is a problem, but women’s representation is increasing organically. My concern with the imposition of quotas and an extremely short time frame for compliance is that women will be open to nudges and winks, and knowing looks from men, hinting at positive discrimination. Equality must come from the bottom up, starting with equal pay. Female accountants are paid a fifth less than men on average for doing the same job sending out the wrong message for women’s prospects and value. When women’s pay is on a par with men at all levels, equality on the board will be an organic process based only on merit and hard work – leaving no one in any doubt it is anything other than fully deserved.”
