Morgan Hunt volunteers get technical with Carillion PLC and Edible Eastside

Morgan Hunt, specialist property and construction recruitment agency, recently teamed up with Carillion PLC and Edible Eastside, to assist on a team challenge community project for Urban Grain.

Urban Grain is a social enterprise based in Birmingham delivering ethical cultural projects such as the urban food garden, created by the Edible Eastside project, which will be used to educate the community about sustainable food production.  Urban Grain aims to demonstrate the full food process-chain from the growing of produce through to cooking and preparation.

The project required Edible Eastside to construct a large wooden shelter to protect the site’s cob oven from weather conditions and to enable greater use of the resource.

Morgan Hunt consultants were invited by their client Carillion PLC, multinational construction services company, to volunteer their help for the day.  The consultants were eager to get involved to help with this valuable project and to showcase their own abilities within the construction industry which they recruit into.

The event was managed as a team challenge event with 20 volunteers from Morgan Hunt, Carillion and other suppliers.  Volunteers were then split up into small teams to construct the shelter in sections including two roofing panels and a number of large planters.  Project planning, carpentry and construction skills were put to the test and after a few hours the wooden shelter was up and ready for use.

Part of Morgan Hunt’s vision is to use their position to help the wider community and it is projects such as this that Morgan Hunt feel really make a difference.  Feedback on the day confirms this with 69 per cent of volunteers confirming that they attended the project to become more involved in the community.  100 per cent of the volunteers would consider attending this type of volunteer project again and 100 per cent felt that they had made a difference to Edible Eastside.

Zoe Young, Divisional Director at Morgan Hunt, volunteered at the team challenge and commented, “As a national recruitment company we have access to many clients that are doing great work within their communities.  Corporate social responsibility is at the heart of our company and when we get to work with our clients in this way, it not only strengthens our business relationships but we also get to see the difference we can make within communities which is important to us as a company and as individuals.”
