The Tech City Investment Organisation (TCIO) gives London a welcome boost with new high profile appointment, says Darwin
Darwin Recruitment the IT & Telecom recruitment specialist comments on the high profile & lsquo;Facebook’ appointment to the TCIO.
The TCIO, the government Quango set up in 2011, has just appointed Facebook's European boss Joanna Shields to help it support and promote start-up firms based in London. “This is a welcome move as London will benefit from having someone as high profile as Joanna. There is a lot of technology talent and innovation in the UK but somehow it’s the Americans who seem to lead in new ventures. Yet they are not always a commercial success, so it’s about time that London gets a boost of confidence”, says Paul Kirby, CEO and Founder of Darwin Recruitment. www.darwinrecruitment.com
Concerns over skill shortages and rising costs of working in London have already been raised. The UK has the highest levels of job mobility in Science and Technology in the Euro zone. Home grown talent can easily be exported to Europe where in exchange for the right skills employees can often make a significant improvement to their lifestyles. With better social benefits in places such as Scandinavia and attractive tax breaks like The Netherlands, global firms across Europe are making job offers look extremely attractive to workers in the UK.
"Clearly the government want to do all they can to make London the number one hub for technology in the world, but they need to realise that this is a global market and they need to work on keeping skills in the UK." Says Paul.
